Rory McIlroy Switches Back to Blades: What it Means for his Game (2026)

Rory McIlroy's Cavity-Back Experiment: A Tale of Two Irons

Remember when Rory McIlroy, the golf world's rising star, decided to switch things up and try something new? Well, it turns out that experiment is officially over. In a recent interview ahead of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, McIlroy announced his return to the familiar comfort of his trusty blade irons.

But why the sudden change of heart? It all started with the TaylorMade P7CB cavity-back irons. McIlroy first tried them out during the final 36 holes of the Australian Open last December, and then again for both DP World Tour starts in Dubai last month. Yet, despite his best efforts, the results weren't quite what he had hoped for.

McIlroy finished T-14, T-3, and most recently T-33 at the Dubai Desert Classic, prompting him to swap back to his Rors Proto blades. So, what went wrong with the cavity-backs? McIlroy explains, "I felt like the cavity-backs had a slight right bias. No matter how I swung them, the weight distribution or blade length just didn't feel neutral. With my blades, I can achieve a very neutral ball flight, but with the cavity-backs, the ball would start to tail off to the right. While this might sound like a negative, I actually liked that it made me feel like I could fully release my iron shots, which is great in theory and practice."

However, the real challenge arose when McIlroy stepped onto the course with a card in his hand. After years of relying on the familiar held-off position through impact, switching to the cavity-backs felt like a different game, especially under pressure or in the heat of competition. As he puts it, "It just didn’t feel as familiar as I wanted it to."

So, what's next for Rory McIlroy? As the defending champion at Pebble Beach, he's making his PGA Tour season debut this week. Will he stick with his blades or give the cavity-backs another chance? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure: McIlroy's journey to finding the perfect iron setup is far from over.
