A major disruption hit UPI services across India on Tuesday evening, causing widespread digital payment issues. Hundreds of users reported transaction failures, highlighting a significant technical problem with the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
The outage was widespread, affecting multiple apps and cities. According to Downdetector.in, over 600 complaints were logged, with 82% of users unable to make payments, 12% facing QR code scanning issues, and 6% experiencing fund transfer problems.
UPI, developed by the National Payments Corporation of India and regulated by the Reserve Bank of India, is a popular instant digital payment system. It allows users to send or receive money directly between bank accounts using mobile apps, without transaction fees from NPCI. UPI is used for daily shopping, high-value transfers, and even offers AutoPay for automatic bill payments.
Despite its convenience, UPI users encountered significant disruptions. The offline transfer method, accessible via *99#, remained functional, but the app-based system experienced widespread issues.
To use the offline UPI service:
1. Dial *99# from your linked bank account mobile number.
2. Select the 'Send Money' option and follow the menu.
3. Choose your transfer method (mobile number, UPI ID, or saved beneficiary).
4. Enter the recipient's details and the amount.
5. Add any necessary remarks.
6. Confirm with your UPI PIN.
This incident underscores the importance of reliable digital payment infrastructure. As UPI continues to evolve, addressing such technical disruptions is crucial for maintaining user trust and ensuring seamless transactions.
